Go to macys.com/giftcard. This is the official Macy's gift card page. Don't use third-party sites for this — there are a few floating around that look legitimate but aren't affiliated with Macy's at all.
Enter your card number. This is the long number printed on the front of the card — usually 16 digits, though some older cards have 15. Type it carefully. No dashes or spaces needed; the form handles formatting automatically.
Find and enter your PIN. This is the part that trips people up. On the back of your physical card, there's a small scratch-off panel — it looks a lot like a lottery ticket scratch panel. Scratch it gently (a coin works best) and you'll reveal a 4-digit PIN. This PIN is only required for the online balance check. You don't need it if you're checking in-store or by phone.
Click "Check Balance." The page will refresh and display your remaining balance. Simple as that — when it works.
