Dud Battery??

I've just bought an M5stack grey that did come with a battery. However the M5stack will only work when powered by the USB attached to my laptop. Is there something I should do to activate the battery or is the battery a dud?. I have tried waiting for it to charge up but the charge value still remains at 100. I have opened up the bottom and the battery shows no signs of failed connections.
